The American Heart Association states that walking has the following benefits:
– Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease
– Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
– Improve blood lipid profile
– Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
– Enhance mental well being
– Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
– Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
– Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes

We all know that it is a good practice to workout on a regular basis as many times a week as possible but it can become monotonous to walk the same walk path over and over again. Yes, wearing earphones to listen to music and radio talk shows, may help but why not try something unique that accomplishes the same results but is more interesting.  My husband, Dr. William Woodruff, introduced this idea to me.  He always recommends that we walk, as a couple, in different shopping malls or at events and when we do, we always are more inspired because we are seeing a variety of scenery, hearing different sounds, getting glimpses of interesting people, and never quite know what to expect.  Afterwards, we feel refreshed.  Thus, I have named this type of walking activity, Creative Walking.

During the Labor Day holiday weekend, we attended an event that gave us an opportunity to do some Creative Walking.  We decided to attend the new Michigan State Fair at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.  This is its second year and we spent about two hours walking and resting in between a bit but we accomplished getting the needed exercise.  The new Michigan State Fair is indoors in one large exhibit hall location and outdoors with carnival rides and a circus.  There are many vendors when you enter indoors selling a multitude of products including clothing, foods, cosmetics, household items, etc.  Then comes what the Michigan State Fair is all about, the fantastic livestock!  We were able to get closer to the animals at the new Michigan State Fair.  There were fewer cages.  We saw many species of cattle, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, poultry and rabbits.  We viewed goat milking and sheep shearing demonstrations.  We watched comical pig races call Swine Downs.

We walked through the carnival of rides in the night where everything was lit with colorful lights and were able to attend the Shrine Circus to see an amazing flying trapeze show and a dancing elephant perform.  The premises were very clean and not overcrowded.  It was a perfect place to take a family and feel comfortable.  The admittance fee was low.  This was great Creative Walking! We learned a lot without an inch of boredom but still accomplished our workout.  Here are some photos that I took of the new Michigan State Fair.  I would highly recommend that you attend next Labor Day weekend in 2014.  I will continue in my next blog post with another Creative Walking event soon.

Have you had a Creative Walking experience in the last year?  Please let me hear from you by responding to this blog post by October 1.  Describe your Creative Walking activity and the length of time it took.  Include your name, the town or city where you live, your profession and/or your affiliation.  Please share photos too, if you have any.  This will be an opportunity to share with others ways that we all can maintain healthy lifestyles by walking on a regular basis but not necessarily in a health club, a gym, or around the block but somewhere else where there is an opportunity to expand horizons.

I look forward to hearing from our blog readers.  Thank you for being a loyal reader of our Health and Nutrition Blog at Orchard Maple Family Dental.  I look forward to hearing from you soon about your Creative Walking!  Thank you.
