Hello out there!  What a magnificent fall we are experiencing!  The trees are already turning into vibrant, warm colors.  What a fine Indian summer and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.  Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year in the state of Michigan.

In my last blog post, I introduced my concept of Creative Walking to my readers.  Creative Walking is never mundane and goes beyond a gym walk or a walk around the block.  I define Creative Walking as selecting walking experiences for good health that are inspiring, uplifting and educational.  One Creative Walking experience that my husband and I along with friends, Dr. and Mrs. Tom Belford, www.drbelfordgentledental.com, had recently was a Sunday at the Michigan Renaissance Festival.  My husband and I had not been to the event in about 8 or 10 years and planned to stay only one hour with our friends who said they had a limited amount of time to spend.  We all remained for five hours!  It was that interesting and fun!!  We only sat once for 30 minutes to watch a jousting match.

The Renaissance era in world history was a rebirth or revival of art, music, literature and education that took place in Europe between the 14th and the 17th centuries.  The Michigan Renaissance Festival that captures this period is set on many acres of open land that has been transformed into a historical, Renaissance village.  Included are food stands with offerings such as barbecued turkey legs, seafood, beef, salads, sandwiches, soups, snacks, gluten-free foods, beverages, desserts, and more.

It is difficult to describe what the Michigan Renaissance Festival is all about because there are so many facets.  There are hundreds of people there dressed predominately in medieval costumes.  Some are in royal attire, in pirate outfits, or resemble elves, etc.  There are knights in shining armor.  There is live musical entertainment in every corner and live theater.  There are fairies in colorful garb.  There is a children’s area with numerous rides and activities.  There are fire eating shows and a multitude of shops to browse.  There are competitions such as ax throwing and bow and arrow shooting.

Last weekend was the final weekend for the Michigan Renaissance Festival.  Here were the highlights for the weekend of September 27-29, 2013:

  • Cupcake Crusades
  • Chocolate Festival
  • Fencing Competition
  • Wine Tasting
  • Grape Stomp
  • Juggling Competition
  • Fudge Fling
  • Couple’s Chocolate Pie Eating Competition
  • Wedding Vow Renewal

If you missed this event this year, it will return next year beginning in August on weekends.  It is an affair for the entire family.  I am sharing some of the sights that I captured on my camera below.
