Your Cure For Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain

-By Dr. John J. Saab (Guest Blog Post Contributor)

Happy New Year!  My name is Dr. John J Saab and I am a West Bloomfield Chiropractor who has been in practice for 30 years. Our specialty is neck and back problems relating from simple muscle strains to disc problems, to scoliosis, neck and back related disorders, TMJ (jaw pain). The Woodruff family endorses Saab Chiropractic, and have been patients for over 25 years.

Have you ever been told you have TMJ? Temporomandibular Joint problems newly described as TMD (Temporomandibular Dysfunction/Disorder). If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you might have TMD, or related issues with your jaw:

  1. If you have an uneven bite?
  2. If you have clicking in your jaw? (put your fingers in your ears, and open and close your mouth, and listen…it should be smooth, regular, and no clicking, or grinding). You should feel both sides open, and move at the same time.
  3. Tight neck muscles which feel strained when you open and close your mouth.
  4. Headaches, occurring after chewing.

Answer yes to any of these questions, then you should have your teeth, and your bite evaluated in our office to determine if this is something with which we can help you. Often the jaw (Mandible), and the neck are related, and the muscles, and biting process affect each other. We have a network of doctors set up to help you, and evaluate your neck and head, and jaw. Sometimes uneven teeth will cause the jaw to misalign, and sometimes an uneven or misaligned jaw joint will cause the teeth to adapt, causing problems.  I look forward to meeting you.

Saab Chiropractic is located on Maple Rd. (15 Mile Rd), just east of Farmington Road.

Naked Fuel Juice Bar, An Oasis In Our Community!

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

Naked Fuel Juice Bar located in West Bloomfield, Michigan, nakedfueljuice.com, is a refreshing oasis that has surfaced in our world of processed, fast food mania. It is owned and operated by a friendly and knowledgeable mother/daughter team, Natasha and Gloria, who promote food as medicine, from Hippocrates, the famous ancient Greek physician who is considered to be the father of medicine. It is a favorite stop of mine especially after a yoga class or a workout session. Since I have been juicing and preparing smoothies for a number of years with my own Omega Juicer and Vitamix, I am thrilled to find a healthy restaurant that is organic, raw, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and does not use any added sugar.

Smoothies, juices, shots, cleanses, soups, salads, sandwiches, etc., are offered fresh. What I like best is the phenomenal education that is provided on the premises. Take a moment to visit the website to read The Story that includes the family’s Passion, Promise, and Philosophy. Some of my menu favorites are the lentil soup, the bone broth, Ignite Veggie Juice, Glo’s Fuel Veggie Juice, the Wheatie Shot, The Terminator Shot, and The Hulk Smoothie. Menu samples are available and there is always something new when you visit. There even is a rewards program for frequent visitors.

The website also includes the menu items, hours, and address details. Naked Fuel Juice Bar has a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere that you will welcome after a busy, stressful day.   It opened its doors to the community about a year and a half ago. Try it! You will be amazed by how much you will learn about plant-based foods that can heal the human body. Thumbs up to Naked Fuel Juice Bar! Great choice for adults, teens, and kids!

Thumbs Up! | Which Wich? Healthy Restaurant

20160725_155823

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

Thumbs up for Which Wich? located at 31217 W. 14 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Michigan 48334.  Manager says his new sandwich restaurant, a franchise, has been open for two months.  I have dropped by on two occasions.  Appears to be popular with customers.

Often I become disappointed when eating out because generally there are very few to no options for vegans or vegetarians.  This is not the case with Which Wich?!!

Which Wich? has a variety of choices with plenty of fresh plant-based additions that customers check off on a sandwich bag that they submit to have custom sandwiches prepared.  There are choices for meat, seafood and cheese lovers, as well, as for persons who prefer vegetarian or vegan selections.  Kids are not left out because there are food items on the menu for children.  The extras are cookies, chips and beverages for your pleasure.  Which Wich? opens early for breakfast!  You can stop by on your way to work!

Prices are reasonable especially if you are on a tight budget.  Also, if you are in a hurry, you can quickly be served.

If you are concerned about your waistline, Which Wich? has you covered!

You can select a traditional sandwich on thick bread slices, a Skinny My Wich on thin bread slices, a Bowlwich which is a salad and a lettucewrap called a Lettucewich.  You can request either a hot or a cold sandwich.

My favorite is the Lettucewich with a black bean patty and all of the veggie fixin’s!!

You will not be disappointed.  Stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Download the app to order online: www.whichwich.com.

Cheers to healthy eating @ Which Wich?!!

Strawberry Sorbet Magic!

strawberry

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

Welcome spring!  Welcome lighter fare recipes!  Here is a low-calorie, two-ingredient dessert/snack recipe that works like magic.  There is no added sugar.  Thus, your dental health and blood sugar will benefit from this treat.   All you need is a quart, 16 ounces, of strawberries and the juice of fresh oranges.  It will make a simple and elegant dessert/snack that will take less than 5 minutes to prepare.  Strawberries and oranges are excellent sources of vitamin C.  Strawberries also have a good amount of fiber.

This recipe also can be used to make popsicles.  All you need is to fill popsicle molds with the prepared strawberry sorbet and freeze.  Kids will love them!  Moms will love them too because they are healthy snacks!

Flint Friends First! Detox Juice

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

orange

Hats off to all of the generous celebrities, Greek organizations, businesses and others who have provided an abundance of bottled water to Flint, Michigan, residents who have been using lead contaminated water since April 2014.  We at Orchard Maple Family Dental are providing a detox juice recipe for our Flint friends and neighbors.  We have also been collecting bottled water at Orchard Maple Family Dental to donate to our Flint friends.  Flint Friends First!

This will be my tenth year in September 2016 of living the vegan lifestyle after losing my mother to cancer in September 2006.   I have felt a strong urgency to research what plant ingredients would be helpful for detoxing lead.  My heart goes out to the little children of Flint who may suffer the most.  Having a background in education and library science, I have researched the nutrients needed to detox lead.  Vitamin C, calcium, and iron are on the top of the list to help with the detoxing process.   I have read in the news that fresh fruits and vegetables have been recommended by nutritionists to the Flint community.  From the books that I have read and the plant-based workshops/lectures that I have attended through the years, I have learned that it is best to juice to acquire the proper nutrients quickly into the bloodstream when attempting to alleviate a health concern.

Here is a simple juice recipe that is sweet in taste due to the orange and apple ingredients.  However, one concern of mine is that everyone does not own a juicer.  This recipe can’t be juiced in a blender.  It requires a juicer to extract only the juice.  I have been satisfied with an Omega juicer that I have owned and used for several years.  It is my fourth juicer and the best one yet since it is simple to use and easy to clean.  I challenge that donated funds to the Flint community also be used to purchase large, commercial juicers for schools, community centers, churches, hospitals, farmers’ markets, or wherever crowds gather, so that plant-based juices can be made accessible to children and other residents.  A fresh juice should be consumed on the same day that it is made or within 24 hours to ensure freshness.  It must be refrigerated.

Here is my simple detox juice recipe that I have created and tested:

Happy Holidays | Peace On Earth & Good Will To Men

peace

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

During this busy holiday season, take a moment to pause to focus on peace, love, and brotherhood towards others in our world, country, state, city, town, community, workplace, and in our home with our family members and friends.  We need harmony to nourish and calm our spirits and minds.  Let’s also take time to show our gratitude to others.
In the last televised lecture that I watched of Dr. Wayne Dyer, author and motivational speaker, before he passed away this year from leukemia at the age of 75, he stressed that it was essential to love, period (Love.)  He felt that all that was needed in life and in this world was to simply love and that was all that was sufficient.
Peace, love, brotherhood, harmony, and gratitude are good for the soul.
Enjoy your holidays.  Here are some peace quotes below from Psychology Today for you to read and meditate on:

Heart Smart Hibiscus Tea

DSCN6979

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

While enjoying the final splendor of fall foliage, why not try a cup of hibiscus tea to warm you on a chilly day? Hibiscus tea has a vivid, red color and a benefit that can be a health advantage. Hibiscus tea has been known to lower blood pressure.

Buy tea varieties without caffeine. Studies have stated that caffeine can increase blood pressure, decrease bone density, and can cause nervousness. I like tea without using any sweeteners, as well, to keep my blood glucose levels low.

Hibiscus tea is a festive tea for company and for holiday occasions. Substitute it for coffee. I planted a hibiscus tree in my front yard this past spring and it has been a joy to watch it bloom continuously. Hibiscus trees grow throughout the world in warm and tropical climates. Hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti, South Korea, and Malaysia. It has been a tradition for hibiscus flowers to be worn behind the ears of Hawaiian and Tahitian women.

Sip a cup of rich, hibiscus tea for a special treat today!

Yo! For Yoga!

yoga

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

About six years ago while I was actively spinning in a spin class (stationary bike class) at a fitness club, I could see through the classroom windows hoards of people walking, like they were following the Pied Piper, to a different class down the hallway with rolled mats.   Later I learned that they were going to a yoga class.

One day I ventured out to try that yoga class out of curiosity.  The lights were dim and there was an instructor who took the class through many different poses (yoga positions) with calm music.  At the end of class there was a brief cool down period.  It was a challenge for me at first because I was not familiar with the poses so I did not return.  When I began to attend again, I went regularly.  I learned that yoga should be practiced often during the month to gain any real benefits.

I am now sold on yoga.  I attend from 3 to 5 times a week.  I even joined a new fitness center to follow an outstanding trained and certified yoga teacher who has been practicing yoga for over 30 years.  The athletic club were I belong teaches 61 classes a week so there is a lot of choice such as Slow Flow Vinyasa, classes for Healthy Backs, and Yin where poses are held for several minutes at a time.  My husband, William Woodruff, D.D.S., has attended practices (yoga classes) with me.
